Elderberry shortbow 50# 30"

I usually do not make so short bows ( I am slowly transfering to warbow making I hope :D) but recently I have made two of them. One is this little elderberry. 60" ntn but very comfortable to shoot, with low set. 50# 30" but I realiesed that I like it more in 28". It is interesting that it is hollow sapling with cross section like U. After two hundred arrows (we had little meeting where everybody tried it) this is follow. As I already said: elderberry is great bow wood, I like it very much. Not heat treated. Nocks are Tim Bakers light tip solution.

The hollow limbs are ridiculous... but can`t imagine this makes long lasting bow! You did not work them out to this U profile?
Anyway another well done sapling!

Amazing bow.
And these hollow limbs are incredible. I would expect a lot of set and chrysals ???
But obviously it survived at least 200 arrows without problems...

My friend has elderberry longbow that shoots every day at least few dozen of arrows, very steady bow still. I think there is no reason to be not longlasting. Jaro made 140# warbow off it and said that in Italia in medieval elderberry was substitution for yew. I just scraped out sponge score.

I hope it will last but I imagine that the gap on belly will get wider over time so limb flattens and gets wider loosing power.
This can perhaps be reduced by two or three windings per limb. What u think?

The Tiller looks so smooth and the Nocks are great. I like the colour of the wood. The U-Shape of the limps works. I do not know why, but I did it in a similar way and the bow is still alive.

Ishi!
You take a stave that looks like a half-hollowed-out piece of split bamboo garden cane and turn it into a beautiful bow, with a great looking tiller and on top of that, you get 50lbs out of it!?! Wottabow and wottaguy! Just what are you going to produce next?!
Raven, how about using it as a long straw, for Robin Hood cocktails? Something with lots of Whisky and vanilla-chocolate cream!?!?
Cheers!

Hi Ishi, again great bow.
I like this kind of bows because i´m working since several weeks onto the same bows.
Very good wood and easy to handle.
( Several benefits, you can use the trunk to the bow-making, you can eat the flowers before they bloom ( blossoms fried in batter) and you can made out of berries the elderberry juice. ( Good for fever and flu.) Best thing to recycle the whole unit.
How many cm ( diameter) was the trunk, how long it is now?
My maximum on this kind of bows is 35-40lbs.

Best regards Jürgen

Thank you very much friends! :)
Moem, I just scraped out spoonge core. I think it is very longlasting wood. Eldermother, my bow form last year, shot until now few thousands of arrow without problem.
Lucky, it is very strong in compression.
Raven, this is natural colour, pig fat is overall it. :D
Bigbadad- just keep watching what is next... :) ;)
Sherrif, it is great wood in all ways, very good!

Hi Ishi,

I really love the style of your bows. I also made an Elderberry bow with hollow limbs, which works great. Do you have a detail picture of the nocks? It seems like wood which is beneth the thread. Arcus did some nocks like this with leather underneath.
Very nice work - keep on building such great bows.

Hi Ishi, this is just an incredible bow. We had a discussion about elderberry-bows in the middle ages a few weeks ago (it is geeting lost - don't know why) so the statement about elderberry as a substitution for yew is very interesting.
