Hi friends! I am interested in buying some steel for knife making for my friend. He has a cousin near Stutgart that can buy it for him. Is there any shop that sales flat steel plates 4-6mm thick? Thank you very much!
P.S. I apology if there is already topic about this, I couldn't find it.
Best regards!

Re: Steel supply near Stutgart
Hm, difficult to say. There are some dealers around Stuttgart but I dont know whether they offer steel suited for knive making.
A good Source (but not cheap) is www.dictum.com or several knive makers in germany.
If it is for some steel (for example "Silberstahl") which is used in industry he shoud contact his local yello pages "Gelbe Seiten" where there are (presumeable) several "Stahlhändler" listed. Neat Stuttgart there was a big dealer called "Lotter", but that was several years ago that I had contact with them.

Hi,
Wolf Borger is not far from Stuttgart I think - just north of Karlsruhe, 40 or 50km at the most.

If it is important to be able to collect and choose in person this might be a worth a try.
Otherwise order online and have the steel sent to your friend. It is unlikely to cost more than a few Euros extra.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Mark

Re: Steel supply near Stutgart
Hmm
It depends of what he wants to do...
If he wants to make Knifes right out of raw steel, with forging it, cutting out its shape etc. he can also get steel out of Springs of old cars. So a wreck yard can also be a good idea. Steel from springs is quality steel and will make good blades. Often less expensive than buying knife blanks.
But it is surely much more work to make a knife from it...

Re: Steel supply near Stutgart
Thank you very much friends. I will forward these informations to my friend. This wolf borger may be good solution: my friend is expirienced blacksmith so he needs some more specific steels than spring steel. I personaly agree that spring steel is excellent material: I have made one excellent hunting knife off it that still can shave after lot of use.

If your friend is a experienced blacksmith, he will be able to specify the type of steel he wants.
How much steel does he want?
"Stahlhändler":
Lotter and Spaeter in the north of Stuttgart,
Zweygart in the south-west os Stuttgart in a small town called Ehningen.
I can offer you some used ballbearings. Diameter about 120mm. Hardabel up to 54-56 Rockwell.
