Dogwood warbow 140# 31" (experimental bow)

Beitrag von Ishi »

Long time ago we talked about dogwood abilities. I had some average sapling and decided to try all its abilities. Off course, it had to be warbow. Sapling was a little snaky, twisted, with few bumps and few transverzal knots across the belly. Had almost 1" of reflex with two strange deflexed places in the middle of the limbs. This is in what it transformed: Dogwood warbow, 140# 31", 72 ntn, 35 mm wide and 26 mm thick, with high crown, no string follow. It is visible that in the handle is all sapling width used, cambio is on the sides. A lot of early draw weight.. off course- pic in front of the wooden wall.Tiller could be better. Stained with walnut stain and everything as always. Overall impression: amazing wood, cornus sanguinea...
I consider this bow as experimental bow, it is not quality enough to be keeped. I will try all kind of experiments on him: overdrawing, cold full draw and etc to see where are the borders of this wood, but seems that it is close to it's limits.

For all: Dogwood=Hartriegel

Ishi, beautyful Bow with a impressive clean Tiller for this Wood. But the outer Limbs could bend better. Let him down to 130lbs and tiller out the Limb-ends for more fun and 32 inches Drawwidth. ;)

Ishi or the Bow^^

I love your puristic bows. I always admire the eye and patience a bower needs when building bows out of grown wood with specific characteristics to get the most out of any piece of wood!

Thank you friends very much for commenting...
Blacksmith, you are right- it should bend more in the outter limbs. But I think retillering would be wasting time, this bow will be broken soon after some tests, to see how far it could handle. Now, when I know dogwood abilities I have some more knowledge to make it better.
I will make some conclusion about this wood, soon.
MoeM, it is interesting working with character bows but sometimes it becomes hard for my nerves, honestly.....

It seems to me that Ishi looks directly into the wood. 8)

Wow, I am totally in love with this bow, Ishi! Simple design, massive drawweight, that's the way I like it ;D !

Could you possibly also make a dogwood bow of that weight for sale? I would certainly be interested.

Windmann, Ishi looks very unfocused, there was some celebrity, StGeorge's day, evening before and I was very well hydrated. :D
Agroman- yes, now I know that good stave of this wood could handle this draw weight, for sure.

Amazing - both your skills and the wood's ability!

Ishi,

that is a real beauty! In my eyes, too precious to "punish and destroy". But I understand your curiosity and the idea of getting to the limits of the wood. You certainly possess the skills to find out what can be achieved with dogwood. I am looking forward to the results!
Anyway, I line up behind Agroman - if you have one of these at around 100 to 120 lbs to trade/sell, please contact me and maybe we can work something out! I would love to shoot/own one...

All the best,
Heiner

This is not premium stave so it is not too precious, just working horse. And testing this bow will allow me to masterize dogwood. Better destroy one and make rest good than be worried about every new dogwood bow. I like to be completely sure.

Nice work! I like dogwood bows, but mine ended up a bit heavy. Jaro has made some dogwood warbows, if I remember correctly he also said that they also tended have a rather high mass. Did you check the mass on this one?

Now when people report early draw weight I always ask for a force-draw-diagram. I have yet to see one (for a straight bow) that is not a straight line.

Ingenious!

I'm looking forward to seeing your other attempts on dogwood that will hopefully follow this one. I'm sure they will be as eye-catching as the bow presented above!
