Hazel longbow 50# 29"

Beitrag von Ishi »

This bow was made from my friend Max, owner of the heavy Gull Wing bow. It is hazel wood from Belyanica mountain, some 3 000 feet high. This sapling had almost 2" of reflex, now holds a little more than 1/2", not heat treated. 73"ntn, 1 3/5 wide on the widest place, 50# 29". It is feather-light bow: 430 grams. Great wood, easy to work and take low set. I got a lot of critics that my full draw pics could be more interesting than wooden wall every time so I will try to change that in the future, but not always.

A Hazel-Flat. Good Tiller an a little bit snakey. Typical: Ishi

We call this special kind of Hazel-Bow: 'Flitzebogen'. ;D

The Back of the Bow is oiled with Pig-Fat?

:-) Yes, I forgot to say: first it was stained with walnut stain and then pig fat and bee wax, coat over coat.
I do not think hazel could handle some higher weights without heat treating, seems this is limit to be without crysals.

50#@29" ???
Neeee! Nix Flitzebogen!
Es ist mir egal ob schon mal jemand sowas gebaut hat.
Ich will ja nicht unken, aber in der überwiegenden Zahl der Fälle geht das schief.

Thank you very much my friends... :-)
I do not consider this bow as nothing except light bow.
Once before, when I was younger and less skillfull than now I have made hazel longbow about 90# (posted somewhere on PP). Then he didn't had any crysals but after years, I spotted one. Seems this was exceptional stave, now I see. That bow is now in my cabin, covered with dust, my nephew do not have time to use it, it is his now. I still think that hazel from my country is not good for heavier weights but excellent for light bows.

Here are the specs:
69" ntn
33 x 26 mm at the handle (1 1/3 x 1" and hair thin over, it meets 5/4 ratio of width and thickness)
1/2" at nocks (nocks were made of dead pine knots, unbelievebly hard)
691 gram of physical weight
90# at 28"
95# at 30".

...all your bows are so well done and beautiful, I could cry!

(Although the last one seems to be at upper limb less radial than downside in full draw ? Is the upper limb longer??)

Hi Ishi, that a great thing.
If i look at my Hazelnut, so i can only respect.!!!!!! Great warbow, i see your face, it shows all the power of the bow.

I got a Hazelnut with 15lbs and this is called "Flitzebogen".

With best regards Jürgen.
Ps: Please, please go ahead to create bows.

Sherrif, I had luck with this sapling, nothing else.. ;)
Pyromir, seems that I have thick fingers: I wrote made from instead made for...this bow is for my friend, made by me.I apology.
Ravenheart: thank you but my bows are not all well done- this one is example. Upper limb is much stiffer than it should be. When I was making this bow I had much less expirience than now and that is reason for unapropriate tiller. ;) I am thinking of retillering this bow .
